BANNER & BANNER MOUNT CONSTRUCTION
Some Ideas for Soccer Moms & Dads

Banners should be colorful and bold. Fabric paint and appliqué can be effective, but use your imagination. You can make the banner like a pillow slip, to slide over the mounting. Heavier materials typically take paint and abuse best.

Make the mount before the banner, so dimensions are known.

A simple method for constructing a mount is to use 3/4" PVC pipe and 3/8" rebar. Typically a hardware store will cut the pieces to length, so you only have to glue them together. Prices are from Home Depot; HomCo sells the same

3/4" PVC is $1.39 for a 10 foot piece

1. 2 - crosspieces 38" each
2. 2 - sides 30" each
3. 2 - legs 16" each

4. 2 - 90 degree elbows, $0.23 each
5. 2 - tees, $0.31 each

6. PVC glue, $2.15

7. 2 - pieces of 3/8" rebar 24" long, $0.45 each

If you want to be very cool, you can store the rebar in the legs, by adding to the bottom:

8. 2 - male plugs, $0.72
9. 2 - female adaptors, $0.56

Be sure that the tees and elbows point the same direction, by fitting the crosspieces into the sides during gluing (but don't glue the crosspieces).

Only glue the legs, tees, sides and elbows together, for ease of transport.

At the game, fit the crosspieces into the uprights, slide the banner on, and the banner will hold the entire mount together. Pound the rebar into the ground and mount the legs; take a hammer for the rebar.

At Peaks View, where holes in the artificial turf aren't allowed, tees can be added to the bottoms of the legs (omit the plugs and adaptors), and four 12" pieces of PVC (10) can be used as supports. You might need sandbags for the wind.

Some additional thoughts:
  1. Use a soccer focus in some aspect of your design.
  2. Letting each player contribute something to the banner makes it a team project.
  3. Be creative in using the color of the uniforms and action to suggest a theme.
  4. The banner can be very simple, but some complexity of design can add a lot to the quality of the final product.
